What a Private Car Sale in Dubai Actually Involves, Stage by Stage
In short: A private car sale in Dubai is not one job but ten, arriving in order: preparing the car, photographing it, pricing it, the advert, the enquiries, the viewings, the negotiation, the payment day and the RTA ownership transfer, plus liability that can follow you after the car has gone.
Ask whether it is better to sell privately or through a dealer in the UAE and the answer you usually get is about money. That is half the question. The other half is a calendar: how many evenings the sale takes, spread across how many weeks, and which of those evenings land on you rather than on somebody else.
This guide is the second half. It sets out the private sale in the order the work arrives, so you can price the hours before you commit to them.
How many weeks is a private sale, really?
Nobody can tell you, and anybody who does is guessing. It depends on the model, the price you set, the photographs, and how many people happen to be looking that month.
The one published selling timescale on this site belongs to something else. On a consignment sale through Bilgatti Auto, most cars sell within 2 to 4 weeks, with popular models going faster and niche models taking longer. That describes a company advertising a car full time. It is not a private sale figure and should not be borrowed as one.
So the honest version is stage by stage: a sequence rather than a schedule. Some stages are one concentrated push. Some stretch across every week the advert stays live. One compresses into a single handover, and one has no end date at all.
What happens, in order?
| Stage | What it involves | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Getting the car ready | Chassis number, mileage, service history, and what comes with the car: extra keys, tow bar, child seats, the original documentation, the service book | A single concentrated session, done once |
| 2. Photographing it | Front, rear, both sides, the interior from the driver's seat, the dashboard, the mileage display, and any damage you would rather declare than argue about later | One session, and some honesty |
| 3. Deciding the price | Working out what your model, condition and mileage are worth in AED in the Dubai market right now | Research, and the risk of guessing wrong in either direction |
| 4. Writing and placing the advert | The copy, the photographs, the listing itself, and keeping it live and current | One session, then ongoing upkeep |
| 5. Enquiries | Every message, including the ones that go nowhere, arriving while you are at work | Interruptions, for as long as the advert is live |
| 6. Viewings | Deciding who is worth an appointment, being present, letting a stranger look over the car | Evenings and weekends, on the buyer's schedule rather than yours |
| 7. Negotiation | Talking price one to one, with nobody in between | Whatever your appetite for it is |
| 8. Payment | Confirming the funds have arrived, in full, before the keys do | The one job nobody else can take, done under time pressure |
| 9. Ownership transfer | The RTA's change of vehicle ownership service registers the car in the buyer's name, covers the sale and purchase agreement, and can issue an insurance refund certificate for the car you have disposed of | A trip and paperwork, arranged around the buyer's availability as well as yours |
| 10. Afterwards | In the UAE the seller can be held liable after the car has changed hands | Open-ended exposure, on a car you no longer own |
Read the table as three different kinds of time. Stages 1 to 4 are front-loaded and finite. Stages 5 to 7 are the part that has no fixed length, because they run for however many weeks it takes somebody to want your car. Stages 8 and 9 compress into a single day, which is where the pressure sits. Stage 10 is not time at all. It is a tail.
That checklist in stages 1 and 2 is not invented for this article. It is what Bilgatti Auto's register your car form asks for, and it works as a preparation list whichever way you decide to sell. Photograph the damage deliberately. A dent declared at the listing stage is part of what the buyer agreed to; the same dent found at a viewing is a renegotiation.
What does "no commission" actually buy you?
Something real, and this guide is not going to pretend otherwise.
A private sale has no commission in it, and no dealer margin either. Whatever the buyer hands over is yours, in full. No rate to ask about, no cut, no third party with an interest in the number. A dealer buying your car is buying it to resell it, and the gap between those two prices is the margin you keep by selling privately. If you know your model, have the weeks and are comfortable negotiating on your own behalf, that advantage is not marketing. It is arithmetic, and it stays in your account.
What it costs is everything in the table, and two rows deserve pricing properly rather than waving through.
Stage 8 first. You are the one verifying that the money has arrived and that it is the full amount, with a buyer in front of you and a set of keys in your hand. An ordinary administrative job, carried out at the least convenient possible moment, with no second attempt at it.
Then stage 10. The sale is not necessarily finished when the money lands, because in the UAE the seller can be held liable after the car has changed hands. If something surfaces months later, the route back leads to you, and by then you have the exposure without the car. Is it safe to sell your car in Dubai goes into that in more detail.
Neither makes a private sale reckless. They are the two line items people leave out when they compare it to a dealer on price alone.
How do I find out what the alternative costs?
By asking, because the comparison only becomes real once you have a number for your own car.
On a consignment sale, Bilgatti Auto sells the car on your behalf instead of buying it from you. Stages 2 to 9 move across: the photography, the valuation, the advertising, the buyer contact, the viewings, the contract, the settlement and the ownership transfer. You keep stage 1, the preparation. Stage 3 is the one that splits: the valuation comes back from Bilgatti Auto free of charge, and you set the minimum price you are willing to accept, so the car is not sold below your figure. The car itself never leaves you. It stays in your parking bay and you keep driving it the whole time it is advertised. At the point of sale, Bilgatti Auto takes over the warranty liability, which is stage 10 leaving your side of the table.
The cost, stated in both directions. Nothing is payable in advance, and commission is charged only on a completed sale, so if the car does not sell you pay nothing. Against a private sale, that commission is money you would otherwise have kept in full. The rate is not published, so ask for it when your valuation comes back. Consignment, trade-in or private sale puts the three side by side, and the sell your car page sets out the model itself.
Start with the free valuation. Send the car's details and photographs through register your car and a market-based valuation comes back within 24 hours, drawn from the car's condition, its mileage and the Dubai market. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. What a free valuation tells you covers what that number is and what it is not.
