Every Way to Sell a Car in Dubai, and What Each One Actually Costs You

In short: There are six realistic ways to sell a car in Dubai: a dealer trade-in, an instant-cash online buyer, a classifieds listing, auction, export, and consignment. None of them is best for everyone. What separates them is who finds the buyer, who handles the RTA transfer, and what you are out of pocket if no sale happens.

Almost every page answering "what is the best way to sell my car in Dubai" is written by a company that sells one of the routes, so the answer is always that route. This one is written by a company too. Bilgatti Auto sells on consignment. The rest of the page is an attempt to map the whole field, including the parts where consignment is the wrong tool.

What are all the routes, and who does the work in each?

Six arrangements, and most sellers meet three or four of them before they have thought about it properly. No price column and no speed column below: both depend on the specific car and the specific buyer, and a number invented here would be worth nothing.

Route Who finds the buyer Who handles the RTA transfer Cost if it does not sell Where the car is meanwhile
Dealer trade-in Nobody has to; the dealer buys the car itself The dealer Does not arise, there is no listing period Handed over when you accept
Instant-cash online buyer Nobody; the company is the buyer The buying company Does not arise once you accept Handed over at their branch
Classifieds listing (private sale) You: photos, listing, messages, viewings You and the buyer between you Nothing but your own time With you
Auction The auction house puts it in front of bidders Varies, ask before you enter the car Ask what is charged if the reserve is not met Usually with the auction house, ask
Export An exporter, or an overseas buyer you find You cancel the Dubai registration and take an export certificate The cancellation is one way With you until it ships
Consignment with Bilgatti Auto Bilgatti Auto advertises the car and handles buyer contact Bilgatti Auto Nothing. Commission only on a completed sale With you, and you keep driving it

Read that across the rows. Trade-in and instant-cash buyers are fast because they remove the search for a buyer, and removing the search is what you pay for. Classifieds and consignment keep a retail buyer in play and take longer. Auction and export suit particular cars rather than particular people.

What does each route actually cost you?

Cost is not only commission. It turns up as margin, as fees, as hours, and occasionally as a liability that outlives the sale.

  1. Dealer trade-in. The gap between a trade price and a retail price. That gap is the dealer's margin and its reason for being in the conversation. Not sharp practice, just the business model.
  2. Instant-cash online buyer. The same gap, plus one question worth asking in writing before you drive anywhere: is the figure the website returned binding, or an opening estimate that gets revised once somebody stands next to the car? The answer varies by company.
  3. Classifieds listing. No commission at all, which is a real advantage. The cost is your evenings, your phone, and the fact that in a private sale in the UAE the seller can be held liable after the car has changed hands. That exposure stays with you once the car does not.
  4. Auction. Fees, and they are the thing to pin down first. Ask what is charged if the car sells, what is charged if it does not, and whether you can set a reserve. An auction with no reserve hands the price decision to a room.
  5. Export. A process cost and a one-way door. Cancelling a Dubai registration for export on a light vehicle comes to AED 140: AED 50 for the certificate, AED 70 for the export plates, AED 20 for the knowledge and innovation fee. Once the vehicle has left the UAE, the export certificate cannot be replaced.
  6. Consignment. Commission, charged only if the car sells, with nothing payable in advance. Against a classifieds listing you are paying commission you would otherwise have kept. Against a trade-in you are swapping a sale that is certain today for a marketing period with no guaranteed outcome. Both are real costs.

What comes back the other way is narrower than "best of both worlds". The car is marketed to a retail buyer rather than sold into the trade. You set the minimum price you will accept, and it is not sold below that. Bilgatti Auto handles the photography, advertising, buyer contact, viewings and paperwork, and takes over the warranty liability at the point of sale. The car never leaves you, so you keep driving it while it is advertised. Most cars sell within 2-4 weeks, popular models faster and niche models longer. If the car has to be gone this week, that is the wrong tool. The sell your car page sets the model out in full.

Whichever route you pick, the paperwork is the same bill

Dubai runs vehicle ownership transfer through an online Sale and Purchase Agreement, executed at an authorised showroom with both parties present and their Emirates IDs verified. The RTA states that the traditional Sale and Purchase Agreement "will be completely cancelled and will no longer be accepted in the service centres". The online one lapses after 14 days. Traffic fines from Dubai and the other emirates have to be paid first, any mortgage released electronically, and electronic insurance and a technical inspection put in place.

None of that changes with the route. What changes is who stands in the queue. A trade-in, an instant-cash sale and a consignment sale all put a company there. A classifieds sale puts you there, next to a buyer you met last week. What documents you need to sell a car in Dubai works through the list.

Which route fits you, and how do you start?

Whichever way you lean, get a number first, because that part costs nothing. Send the car's details and photos through register your car and Bilgatti Auto replies within 24 hours with a free, market-based valuation drawn from the car's condition, its mileage and the Dubai market. No obligation to sell afterwards. What a free valuation tells you covers which photographs do the work, and consignment, trade-in or private sale goes deeper on the three routes most sellers narrow down to.
