What is it like to buy a used car from a consignment dealer in Dubai?

In short: Bilgatti Auto in Dubai sells cars on consignment, so every car it advertises still belongs to the private owner who has been driving it. You get a seller who knows the car's history first-hand, and a company rather than a stranger handling the contract, the settlement and the ownership transfer.

Used car listings in Dubai usually come from one of two places. A dealer has bought the car, put it on a forecourt and marked it up. Or a private owner is advertising it themselves, and every part of the deal — the messages, the viewing, the paperwork — runs between the two of you. A consignment dealer is a third arrangement, and it borrows one half from each.

Bilgatti Auto, formerly Norwest Motors, sells cars on consignment in Dubai. It does not buy the cars it advertises. Each one belongs to a private owner, and it stays with that owner, in normal use, until the sale completes. What Bilgatti Auto supplies is the selling: photography, advertising, buyer contact, viewings, the contract, the settlement and the transfer.

That produces a split worth understanding before you enquire about anything. The car comes out of a private household. The transaction comes from a company.

Who am I actually dealing with, the owner or the dealer?

Both, at different points, and the division is clean.

The car's history belongs to the owner. Because Bilgatti Auto never bought the vehicle, there is no stock period in between where the car changes hands inside the trade and the story thins out at each step. The person who chose the car, serviced it and drove it is still the person who owns it while you are standing next to it. Questions about the service book, the second set of keys, whether it has done school runs or Sheikh Zayed Road at seven every morning — there is somebody behind those answers who was there.

Everything transactional belongs to Bilgatti Auto. The viewing is arranged through Bilgatti Auto, around the owner's availability, rather than by trading messages with a stranger. You sign with Bilgatti Auto. You settle with Bilgatti Auto. Bilgatti Auto handles the ownership transfer. And once the car is yours, Bilgatti Auto takes over the warranty liability, which in a private sale in the UAE can rest with the individual who sold you the car.

The commission itself is not your side of the arrangement. It is charged to the owner, only on a completed sale, and the rate is not published.

Why does the warranty liability clause matter to a buyer?

Sellers are told about that clause as a benefit, because it removes an exposure they would otherwise carry after the car has gone. Read from the other side of the table it does something different but equally practical.

In a private sale in the UAE, the seller can be held liable after the car changes hands. That is only worth something to a buyer if the seller is still findable. Bilgatti Auto's own selling pages note that expats leaving the UAE are a common reason people sell, which is another way of saying that the private seller you buy from is not guaranteed to still be in the country later on. On a consignment sale the liability sits with Bilgatti Auto instead — a company at 10 San'a Rd, Ras Al Khor Industrial First, with a phone number and published opening hours, which does not board a flight.

One thing not to read into it: nothing here says the car has been inspected. Bilgatti Auto has not had it on a ramp, because the car never leaves its owner's possession. Look at the car the way you would look at any used car, and put the questions that matter to you to Bilgatti Auto before you commit.

How does this compare with buying privately or from a dealer's own stock?

Three routes, side by side. There is no price column and no speed column, because both depend on the specific car and the specific seller in front of you, and a number invented here would be worth nothing.

Buying privately Buying a dealer's own stock Buying on consignment with Bilgatti Auto
Who owns the car until you buy it The private seller The dealer, which bought it to resell The private owner who has been driving it
Who you sign and settle with The private seller The dealer Bilgatti Auto
Who can answer detailed history questions The owner, directly The dealer, from the paperwork and what it was told at purchase The owner, who still has the car
Who arranges the viewing You and the seller between you The dealer Bilgatti Auto, around the owner's availability
Who handles the ownership transfer You and the seller between you The dealer Bilgatti Auto
Warranty liability afterwards In the UAE the seller can be held liable after the car changes hands The dealer that sold it Bilgatti Auto takes it over
Where the car is before the sale With the owner On the dealer's forecourt With the owner, still being driven

The middle column is not a bad way to buy a car and this guide is not going to pretend it is. It is a different trade-off: a dealer's own stock is in one place, ready to look at, and priced to include the margin that got it onto the forecourt. Consignment keeps the private owner in the picture and puts a company in charge of the paperwork. The same three routes seen from the seller's side are set out in consignment, trade-in or private sale.

Can I finance a car I buy this way?

Bilgatti Auto can help arrange car financing through UAE banks, with a response on an application within 24 hours.

The published requirements are short. You are 18 or older, you have a stable income, you have no payment defaults, and you hold UAE residency. Whether a bank approves the application is the bank's decision, and so are the rate and the terms — Bilgatti Auto helps arrange the finance, it is not the lender.

Before applying, the calculator on the financing page gives you a rough monthly figure. You set the car price, the down payment and the loan term, and it returns the loan amount, the monthly payment and the total cost. Terms run from 12 to 84 months in steps of a year, and at least 20 per cent down is the recommended starting point. One caution about the rate on that screen: the calculator applies 3.9 per cent as a worked assumption so the arithmetic has something to run on. It is not Bilgatti Auto's rate and it is not a quote. Your rate comes from the bank. Prices and payments are in AED throughout.

How do I find out what is available?

Here the honest answer differs from what a dealer page usually says.

The listing page at /cars can be searched by brand, model or location, then narrowed by fuel type, transmission, price range, model year and mileage, and sorted by newest first, by price in either direction, or by lowest mileage. There is nothing on it right now — the selection is being updated, so refreshing the page is not the move. Calling is.

Because the cars are other people's rather than a purchased inventory, what is available shifts with what owners have listed that week. On the selling side the published expectation is that most cars sell within 2-4 weeks, with popular models going faster and niche models taking longer, so any list is a snapshot with a short life. A phone call gets you a current answer and lets you say what you are looking for, which a filter cannot do.

Call +971 52 270 8056, email bilgattiauto@gmail.com, or get in touch here. The office is at 10 San'a Rd, Ras Al Khor Industrial First, Dubai, open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00.

If the car you are buying is replacing one you already own, that car can go out the same way. A free valuation comes back within 24 hours from the details and photos you send through register your car, with no cost and no obligation to sell afterwards. How car consignment works in Dubai covers that half of the process in full.
