What Documents and Details Do You Need to Sell a Car in Dubai?
In short: There are two sets of paperwork, not one. To get a car listed with Bilgatti Auto in Dubai you supply the chassis number, your contact details, the service history, a note on faults, the extra equipment and up to ten photos. The RTA ownership transfer separately runs on Emirates ID, valid insurance, an inspection and cleared fines.
Selling a car in Dubai has a reputation as a paperwork job, and the reputation is about half deserved. Two separate stacks of documents are involved, and people tend to merge them into one intimidating pile. Pull them apart and the job shrinks.
The first stack is what a seller needs to get the car advertised at all. The second is what the Roads and Transport Authority needs before the car legally becomes somebody else's. Different documents, gathered at different points, and in a consignment sale only one of the two is your job.
What do I need to send before my car can be listed?
Bilgatti Auto sells on consignment, so nobody is buying the car from you and the car never leaves your possession. What Bilgatti Auto needs instead is a complete and accurate description of the vehicle, because the listing a buyer reads is assembled from what you send. The form on register your car asks for six things.
- Chassis number (VIN). Required, and the first field on the form. It asks for the chassis number rather than a plate, which is the right identifier here, and it is printed on your vehicle registration card, the mulkiya. It pins down the exact vehicle where a description in words leaves room for argument.
- Name, email and phone number. All three required. A valuation has to have somewhere to go.
- Faults and issues. A free text box, described on the form as any faults, damage or wear. Dents, kerbed wheels, tired tyres, a warning light that comes on cold, anything mechanical you already know about.
- Service history. Another free text box, prompted with a single question: when was the last service performed. A complete history is one of the few things that reliably makes a used car easier to sell rather than something a buyer has to take on trust.
- Extra equipment. Tick boxes for extra keys, a tow bar, child seats, original documentation and the service book, plus a free text field for anything not on the list.
- Photos. Up to ten images, five megabytes each at most.
The photo guide on the form names eight shots: front view, rear view, left side, right side, interior from the driver's seat, dashboard, mileage display and any damage. That last one is the shot people skip, and it is the one that works hardest for you. Damage photographed at the listing stage is priced in from the beginning. Damage a buyer finds at a viewing is a renegotiation.
Worth noticing what the registration form does not ask for in writing: mileage. There is no odometer field, which is exactly why the mileage display appears in the photo list. The shorter valuation form on the sell your car page does ask for mileage as a typed figure.
Nothing on this list is a certificate, a stamp or a government document. It is a description, and you can assemble all of it standing next to the car with a phone in your hand. What does the ownership transfer itself require?
This is the second stack, and it is the one that carries actual legal weight. The RTA service is called "Apply for Changing a Vehicle Ownership", and the RTA describes it as transferring ownership from the seller and registering the vehicle officially under the buyer's name, performing an online sale and purchase agreement, and issuing an insurance refund certificate for a vehicle that has been disposed of.

Read down the right-hand column and the point of the table becomes obvious. Almost every line is administrative rather than personal. Insurance, inspection and the transfer document are steps in a process, not possessions to dig out of a drawer, and in a consignment sale through Bilgatti Auto the contract, the settlement and the ownership transfer are handled for you.
The fines row is the exception, and it is the one that surprises people at the worst possible moment. Fines follow the car. If a stack of them is outstanding, that has to be resolved before the registration moves, and finding out on the day is unpleasant. Checking the balance early costs nothing.
